| New South Wales: (abbreviated
as NSW) is Australia's most populous state, located in the south-east
of the country, north of Victoria and south of Queensland. It was
founded in 1788 and originally comprised much of the Australian
mainland, as well as Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island. During the
19th century large areas were successively separated to form the
British colonies of Tasmania, South Australia, Victoria, and Queensland. |

| Population: The
population of NSW is 6.72 million as per the census of 2006. Of this,
over 60% population is based in Sydney.NSW is the fourth largest and
the most populous state of Australia. |

| Climate: Temperate,
free from extremes of hot and cold. Coast experiences humidity during
summer months (December to February). Hottest area is the North western
part of the state and coldest is the snowy mountains. Snow persists
during long periods during June to August. |

| Longest River: Murray - Darling river. Flows towards the west into the Indian Ocean. |

| Major cities of NSW: Newcastle, Gosford, Sydney & Wollongong |

| Protected areas of NSW: The
state has over 600 National Parks and reserves in NSW. Royal National
Park, which is the second oldest in world is located in this state.
Other major national parks of the state are the Blue mountain national
park, Wollemi national park, etc. |
